OUR STORY

FOUND IN AN ICONIC DC

NEIGHBORHOOD

Dupont Circle is one of the most culturally rich neighborhoods in Washington DC. The center of high society at the turn of the century, the wealthiest families in the U.S. entertained lavishly in their palaces and townhouses on its leafy streets.  Starting in the 1970s, it became the center of the city’s LGBT community and a hub for Washington’s intellectuals.

Highlights of the neighborhood include the Phillips Collection which is the first museum of modern art in the U.S and the fountain at the center of the circle designed by the sculptor of the Lincoln Memorial, Daniel Chester French.

When it first opened in 1890, the mansion at 1312 18th Street NW was a unique building in a neighborhood full of special residences. Built by one of the city’s preeminent developers, it featured elaborate brickwork and a romantic shingled oriel with bow windows. Converted first into an embassy for the government of Albania, its fate in recent years was a sad one—as a forgotten Class C office building. Seeing the potential for a beautiful building’s renaissance, the team behind Maison Dupont began restoring it in 2021, and after three years of painstaking work, opened as the city’s most exciting new inn in 2024.
